What Is Velvet Skin? A Combined Treatment Using Dermapen Microneedling and Massage Peel

Velvet Skin is a treatment that combines “Dermapen Microneedling” and “Massage Peel.” After Dermapen creates microscopic channels in the skin, the Massage Peel agent is applied to work toward firmer, more radiant skin.

Massage Peel is an effective peeling treatment on its own, but when combined with Dermapen Microneedling, the cosmetic ingredients can penetrate more deeply into the skin.

The synergistic effect of both treatments helps stimulate collagen production. This combination is also expected to help tighten and firm sagging skin.

What Is Dermapen Microneedling? A Treatment That Harnesses the Skin’s Natural Healing Power

Dermapen Microneedling is a treatment that uses the fine needles of a pen-shaped device to create micro-channels in the skin, aiming to enhance the skin’s recovery capacity. It is primarily used to help improve Acne Scars, clogged pores, and to work toward firmer, more radiant skin.

In addition, the needles have a diameter of just 0.20 mm, which helps minimize discomfort during treatment while activating the fibroblasts in the dermis. This is expected to promote collagen production and improve overall skin texture.

What Is Massage Peel? A Treatment That Delivers Cosmetic Agents Deep into the Skin

Massage Peel is a treatment in which the cosmetic agent “PRX-T33” is massaged into the skin to allow it to penetrate. Due to how it works, it is also known as “Collagen Peel.”

The main ingredients of PRX-T33 are trichloroacetic acid (TCA), hydrogen peroxide, and kojic acid. Trichloroacetic acid stimulates the fibroblasts in the dermis and strongly promotes collagen production.

Hydrogen peroxide acts to reduce the inflammatory effects of trichloroacetic acid, while kojic acid helps suppress melanin production — working to improve the appearance of pigmented spots and dull skin while helping to keep inflammation risk in check.

What Is Collagen Peel (Massage Peel)? Five Expected Benefits and the Risks of At-Home Use

Benefits You Can Expect from Velvet Skin

The main benefits that can be expected from Velvet Skin include the following three:

  • Improvement of Acne Scars and crater-like indentations
  • Improvement of enlarged pores
  • Improvement of dull skin and Wrinkles

Velvet Skin is a treatment that aims to improve skin quality by promoting collagen production. The melanin-suppressing properties of kojic acid also mean that improvement in pigmented spots and dullness may be expected.

Read on for a detailed explanation of each benefit.

Benefit ① Improvement of Acne Scars and Crater-Like Indentations

Velvet Skin may be helpful for improving the appearance of Acne Scars.

When acne-related inflammation is left untreated, immune responses can eventually affect the dermal layer of the skin, leading to crater-like depressions. Sunken Acne Scars have generally been considered difficult to recover from naturally.

Velvet Skin works on the dermal layer of the skin to help stimulate collagen production. As the skin regenerates, the indentations may be raised, making Acne Scars less noticeable.

Benefit ② Improvement of Enlarged Pores

Velvet Skin may also help improve enlarged pores.

When pores become more visible with age, this is generally referred to as “sagging pores.” As the skin loses collagen and begins to sag, the pores are stretched vertically and appear larger.

By promoting collagen production through Velvet Skin treatment, the skin may regain firmness and elasticity. As sagging improves, you may be able to work toward smoother skin with less noticeable pores.

Benefit ③ Improvement of Dull Skin and Wrinkles

Velvet Skin may also be beneficial for dull skin and Wrinkles.

When the skin’s healing capacity is enhanced through Velvet Skin treatment, melanin pigment — a key cause of dullness — may be expelled from the skin. The key ingredient kojic acid also helps suppress further melanin production, working to both improve and help prevent dullness.

In addition, the treatment may help restore skin elasticity and improve the appearance of fine lines.

Does Velvet Skin Really Work? Many Patients Notice Results After Their First Session

Some people may wonder whether Velvet Skin is truly effective.

Even a single Velvet Skin session is expected to help improve skin texture.

However, since the treatment effects tend to peak around one week after the session, regular follow-up treatments are important if you are looking for longer-lasting results.

In particular, treating Acne Scars and enlarged pores typically requires 4 to 6 or more sessions. Rather than stopping treatment on your own judgment due to concerns about effectiveness, we encourage you to continue under the guidance of your physician.

How Often Should You Have Velvet Skin? Once a Month for 5 Sessions Is the General Guide

The recommended frequency for Velvet Skin treatment is approximately once a month.

While the effects of Velvet Skin can persist for several months, receiving treatment on a regular basis is important for enhancing and maintaining results.

Although this may vary depending on your condition, a standard course of treatment is typically once a month for 5 sessions. After completing one course, continuing treatment every 2 to 3 months may help maintain improvements in skin quality.

Are There Any Drawbacks to Velvet Skin? Side Effects May Occur

It is important to understand the potential risks of side effects before undergoing Velvet Skin treatment.

Due to the nature of the treatment, there is a rare possibility of bruising or inflammation occurring.

That said, the needles used in Velvet Skin are very fine and leave virtually no marks. The ingredients in the agent also have anti-inflammatory properties, and the overall risk of side effects is considered to be relatively low.

Velvet Skin Downtime | Redness, Swelling, Bruising, and More

The downtime for Velvet Skin is around 10 days, and you should be aware of the possibility of redness and swelling.

  • Common downtime symptoms include the following:
  • Redness and flushing (approximately 2–3 days)
  • Bruising and swelling (approximately 1–10 days)
  • Dryness and itching (approximately 1–10 days)
  • Peeling (approximately 2–10 days)

In addition to the above, there is a rare possibility of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. After treatment, be sure to take UV protection measures, such as applying sunscreen and using a parasol.

Contraindications for Velvet Skin

The following individuals are not eligible for Velvet Skin treatment:

  • Those who are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Those with diabetes or collagen vascular disease
  • Those with a keloid tendency
  • Those with dermatitis
  • Those with allergies to metals, kojic acid, or xylocaine

In addition, the use of topical medications containing “Differin Gel,” “tretinoin,” or “hydroquinone” must also be avoided.

If you have any relevant medical history or are taking other medications, please consult your physician in advance.

Is Velvet Skin Painful? Discomfort During Treatment Is Generally Minimal

Most patients experience very little discomfort during Velvet Skin treatment.

While the use of needles may be a concern for some, the Dermapen needles used in Velvet Skin have a diameter of just 0.20 mm.

The needles typically used for blood draws are generally around 0.70 mm in diameter, so the Dermapen needles are considerably finer, making them less likely to cause discomfort.

Additionally, the insertion depth of the needles can be precisely adjusted as needed, and a topical anesthetic cream may also be applied. If you are concerned about discomfort, please speak with your physician beforehand.

How Velvet Skin Treatment Proceeds

Velvet Skin treatment is generally carried out in the following steps:

  1. Consultation and Counseling
The physician will assess your skin condition and discuss your concerns.
  2. Anesthesia
A topical anesthetic cream will be applied if necessary.
  3. Treatment
After Dermapen Microneedling creates micro-channels in the skin, the Massage Peel agent “PRX-T33” is applied.
  4. Aftercare
A specialized mask or other post-treatment care is applied.

Please note that makeup is not possible on the day of treatment. If you are concerned about redness, we recommend keeping your schedule free after the session and considering covering any redness with makeup from the following day onward.

Post-Treatment Progress and Aftercare for Velvet Skin

Immediately after Velvet Skin treatment, makeup and face washing are not permitted.

The table below summarizes the key precautions during the post-treatment recovery period.

Activity Notes
Bathing Shower: permitted on the day of treatment; bath: permitted from the following day
Makeup Avoid on the day of treatment; permitted 24 hours after
Skincare Avoid on the day of treatment; toner, emulsion, and sunscreen permitted from the following day
Face Washing Permitted 6 hours after treatment
Strenuous Exercise Permitted once redness has subsided

For approximately one week after Velvet Skin treatment, the skin tends to become dry more easily.

From the day after treatment, be sure to maintain a consistent skincare routine using moisturizing cream, toner, and similar products.
